MEDELLIN, Colombia (AP) — A small plane crashed Monday in an area of the central Colombian city of Medellin, killing eight people on board, airport authorities said. There were no immediate reports of damage to the ground.
The plane crashed after taking off from Olaya Herrero Airport, Colombian aviation officials said in a statement. Six passengers and two crew members were identified as dead. It is not yet known whether there were more than eight people in the plane.
The exact cause of the crash has not yet been established. Medellin Mayor Daniel Quintero said in a statement that the plane suffered an “engine failure” during takeoff.
“Unfortunately, the pilot was unable to maintain the plane and it crashed in the area,” Quintero said. Seven houses were destroyed and six other buildings were damaged, he said.
Firefighters and other emergency personnel responded.
The plane was flying to the western department of Choco.
