HONG KONG (AP) — A woman accused of helping a suspect in the gruesome murder and dismemberment of Hong Kong model Abby Choi has been arrested in China, Hong Kong police said Tuesday.
As a result of the arrest of a 29-year-old woman, the total number of persons involved in the case reached seven people. Police said they suspect she helped another suspect and then fled to China. She was handed over to Hong Kong authorities at the port of Shenzhen Bay on Tuesday, they said.
The gruesome killing of Choi, 28, has shocked many in Hong Kong and mainland China because the semi-autonomous city in southern China has a very low rate of violent crime.
Last week, her ex-husband Alex Kwong, his father Kwong Kaw and his brother Anthony Kwong were charged with murder after police found the remains of a body Kwong Kaw rented in a Hong Kong suburb near the border. with mainland China. Alex Kwong’s mother, Jenny Lee, faces one count of perverting the course of justice. All four were remanded in custody without bail.
Police have also arrested two others who are accused of helping other suspects in the case.
Choi, who had more than 100,000 Instagram followers, disappeared on February 21, according to a statement later filed with police.
She had financial disputes worth tens of millions of Hong Kong dollars (millions of dollars) with her ex-husband and his family, police said earlier, adding that “some people” were unhappy with Choi’s handling of her finances.
Although violent crime is rare in Hong Kong, the case resembles several other shocking murders. In 2013, a man killed his parents, and their heads were later found in cold stores. In 1999, three members of an organized crime group kidnapped and tortured a woman before her death. Her skull was later found inside a Hello Kitty doll.
