BARCELONA, Spain (AP) – Karim Benzema scored late to snatch Real’s 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano and extend their advantage in the Spanish league on Saturday.

Benzema and Vinicius Junior finally unlocked Rayo’s defense in the 83rd minute, when an exchange of passes in the scored zone between the strike partners allowed the French striker to kill the winner.

It was Benzema’s 19th goal in the league. In that campaign, he scored 26 goals in 31 games in all competitions for his club.

The victory took the team of Carlo Ancelotti from Seville, who took second place, by nine points.

On Sunday, “Seville” faces an always difficult derby with “Real”, which took third place, just six weeks after their clash in the Spanish Cup was overshadowed by a fan of “Betis”, who hit the player “Seville” on the head with pieces of PVC .

On Thursday, Rayo visits Betis to win a 2-1 defeat in the return match of the Copa del Rey semifinals. Meanwhile, Madrid will play Real Madrid next weekend before hosting Paris Saint-Germain on March 9, who will have to return after a 1-0 defeat in the 1/8 finals of the Champions League.
