The PGA tour heads north to Columbus for this week’s Memorial Tournament, founded and hosted by Jack Nicklaus at his designed Muirfield Village Golf Club. One of seven events of the regular season with a prize pool of over $ 10 million. It is a field with seven of the top 10 players in the Official World Golf Rankings, led by tournament favorite John Ram (odds 8-1). Last year, Patrick Cantley (odds 22-1) defeated Colin Morikov in the first hole of the playoffs, receiving his fourth victory in the PGA Tour and his second victory at the Memorial.

The village of Murfield has been the venue of the tournament since the tournament was founded in 1976, and also hosted the 2020 Working Days Championship the week before the Memorial, albeit in a simpler mode. The 2021 event hit headlines when Ram looked like he won the tournament after holding a 54-hole lead over six shots but was forced to retire after the third round due to a positive COVID test.

The traditional pair-72 scheme at a distance of about 7,400 yards plays out as a challenging challenge when the winner is usually in the range of 10 to 15 less. Typically, the key factors are the iron and the game around the green, and the champion took first or second place in each of the last three tournaments held here. With penalty misses due to the tee, accuracy is usually much more important than the distance from the driver, and a rigid setup will help players avoid the whip.

The following five golfers have the lowest average score in Muirfield Village since 2018 (minimum three performances):

It’s no surprise to see Rama’s name at the top of this list, as he would probably have been the reigning champion for the second year in a row had it not been for the unfortunate turn of events last year. He dominated the event with a stellar iron game, scoring more than two shots per round on the approach to the Memorial over the past seven rounds. It should be a great place for him to fix the ship in his short game and he is clearly the player to be defeated this week.

Another player who has succeeded with his irons in Muirfield Village is Scott, who took the lead in the approach to punches in his performance, who took second place in 2019. He has been successful in his last seven appearances at the event, but has not come out with exactly the best form with his only top 10 this year on the Riviera – another place where he has played well. Returning to a familiar place makes it a possible victory option with a score of 50-1.

Spit turned the corner significantly after missing out on a result at The Masters with three top 10 in four starts, including a win at Hilton Head. He did it despite a bad game on the greens, gaining a huge advantage on the field from you to the greens. Spieth will need to start putting it better to fight consistently and he’s a bit risky just 22-1 this week with how sporadically he’s been with the driver.

Six in a row finished in the top 30 and one after another result in the top 10 of Pereira, who will make his first trip to the event. There is also no reason to believe that he will not be suitable for Murfield Village, given that he is long and accurate elusive and ranks ninth in the number of strokes this season. Candidates offer him value beyond the top 15 options on the board.

Open elections

Shane Lowry (+2000): Surprisingly, it’s been almost three years since Lowry’s last victory in the PGA Tour when he filmed the Open Championship, especially considering how well he played this year. He has twice fought on one throw and was one of the best players in the world this year, but he is still a bit under the radar. If he left for T6 last year, it should be a good opportunity for Lowry to put an end to his win-win drought.

Cory Connors (+6000): Conners looks like one of the best figures on the board, as the contenders fell for him after a miss at the PGA Championship. He is one of the few guys in the field with ties to Ohio who has played collegially in the state and was in great shape this spring.

Matt Kuchar (+7500): This week, Kuchar has something to like – the champion of the 2013 competition, who took four points in the top 5 in Murfield Village. He particularly struggled for most of 2020 and 2021, at one point falling outside the top 100 in the OWGR, but has since regained his form with three top 10 this year, including a pair of top 3 in the last two months.

Seamus Power (+500): We recently saw Power’s name at the top of the leaderboard when he spent four rounds in the 60s on Byron Nelson and then got his first career result in the top 10 at a major championship. He is not doing anything wrong and accurate, which should lead to success on his first trip to Murfield Village.

Alex Noren (+600): Noren is starting to play golf, which we saw with him when he first went on the Tour five years ago with a pair of top 10 this year and three top 20 in the last five starts. Last year he nearly hit the top 10, and this season he is gaining throws in all four categories that have received hits.

Russell Knox (+1200): Knox’s game is largely in line with the course, as this season he ranks 11th in driving accuracy, 26th in the avoidance of tragedy and 24th in the approach of blows, so it is not surprising that he made the last six cuts at the Memorial. Last week he got a solid T-15 at the Colonial, his third result in the top 15 this year.

The best bets on the Memorial meeting

Chris Kirk (-120) through Jason Day: The match is between two players going in opposite directions, where Day goes beyond the top 100 in the OWGR, and Kirk has revived with five finishes in the top 15 in the last nine starts. He also showed good form at the Memorial with the best T-4 finish. Day is a tough choice in matches with three missed shots in the last six starts and only one top 10 this season.

K. H. Lee (-115) over Keith Mitchell: Mitchell played well earlier this season, but since the end of the match in Florida he has had problems and he has not had good success at Murfield Village, making 2 of 4 cuts with the best T-22 finish. Lee, on the other hand, made all three cuts here as well in better shape.
