“Celebrate something bigger than yourself”

Participants in the Vernon High School JROTC program continued the tradition of Remembrance Day by placing 79 American flags on the graves of local veterans.

Instructor Major William Chomos led the students to a service Friday at Vernon Cemetery. Chomos says students consider the annual event an honor.

“They take it very seriously,” he said. “Once each flag is set, the student stops and is given time to greet the grave. And that’s the most important thing to me. We all remain so busy, but it is important to take this time to pause and remember those who have served our nation, take a moment and celebrate something more than yourself. ”

The flags were handed over to Vernon Garden Club and Chipley AMVETs Post 007. Flags that are no longer usable are removed from the graves and duly retired.
