Chappell Roan, a standout winner at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, delivered one of the night’s most impactful messages.

The “Good Luck, Babe” artist took home the Best New Artist award, dedicating her victory to the queer and trans community.

“I dedicate this award to all the drag artists who inspire me, and to the queer and trans people who fuel pop,” Roan said, reading from her diary.

She continued, addressing queer kids in the Midwest, “I see you, I understand you because I’m one of you. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t be exactly who you want to be.”

Roan shared the Best New Artist category with nominees like Benson Boone, Gracia Abrams, Shaboozey, Teddy Swims, and Tyla.

Earlier in the evening, Roan captivated the audience with a performance of her hit “Good Luck, Babe!” featuring Joan of Arc-inspired visuals, earning her the nickname “Roan of Arc.”

Recently, Roan made headlines by addressing concerns about “creepy” fans and the need to set boundaries for her safety. She explained online, “Embracing the success of my work and the love I receive is important, but I do not accept intrusive behavior, being touched, or being followed.”

She added, “I want to enjoy my life, hang out with friends, go to the movies, and feel safe, just like everyone deserves.”
