Child dead, another hospitalized, two more missing in canoe accident near Warden

WARDEN, Wash. — One child is dead, another is in the hospital and their father and brother are missing after a canoeing accident in Columbia National Park on Friday.

A 32-year-old father and three six-year-old sons. eight and 10 — went to the steep lake at the refuge south of SR 262 to fish. At some point before nightfall, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office reports their canoe overturned. A 10-year-old boy was able to get ashore, but his father and two brothers did not.

Family members became concerned when the group did not return and went in search of the missing. They found the 10-year-old boy and called 911 just before 11 p.m

A 10-year-old boy was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. Rescuers found the body of an eight-year-old boy.

The father and the six-year-old boy have not yet been found. Crews will continue to search for missing members. GCSO says the family’s name will not be released until recovery operations are complete.
