Con Edison Prepares for Storm, Advises Safety Measures

Con Edison crews are gearing up to respond to potential outages caused by the severe rain and windstorms forecasted for New York City and Westchester County. Strong winds can cause trees and branches to fall onto overhead power lines, potentially bringing them down, disrupting service, and blocking roads.

Public Safety Warning

The company strongly advises the public to avoid downed wires as they may be live and dangerous. For safety, Con Edison personnel may guard downed wires until repairs are completed.

Restoration Plan

Con Edison’s restoration priorities include critical customer facilities that impact public services, such as mass transit, hospitals, police and fire stations, and sewage and water-pumping stations. Following this, crews will focus on repairs that restore power to the largest number of customers quickly, and then move on to smaller groups and individual customers.

How to Report an Outage

Customers can report outages and check service restoration status in several ways:

  • Online at conEd.com/reportoutage
  • Through Con Edison’s mobile app for iOS or Android devices
  • By calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633)

When reporting an outage, it is helpful to have your Con Edison account number available. Customers who report outages will receive updates on estimated restoration times as they become available. This information is also accessible on the Con Edison outage map.

Safety Tips

Con Edison provides the following safety tips to help customers navigate the storm:

  • Avoid Downed Wires: Treat all downed wires as if they are live. Never attempt to move or touch them. Be aware that downed wires can be hidden by tree limbs, leaves, or water.
  • Report Downed Wires: Immediately report downed wires to Con Edison and your local police department. If a power line falls on your car, stay inside and wait for emergency personnel.
  • Avoid Transformers on the Ground: Transformers are gray metal drums attached to wires and poles and should be avoided if they fall.
  • Portable Generator Safety: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installing and using a portable generator. Never plug a generator into a wall unit, use it indoors, or set it up near open windows or vents.
  • Power Outage Precautions: If your power goes out, disconnect or turn off appliances that would automatically turn on when service is restored to avoid circuit overloads.
  • Prepare Flashlights and Radios: Ensure your flashlights and battery-operated radios are working and have extra batteries. Local radio and television stations will provide weather updates and news on service restoration.
  • Charge Mobile Devices: Charge your cellphones and other mobile devices while you still have power.
