Latest news: One of Amazon’s top leaders, Dave Clark, CEO of Amazon’s global consumer business, is leaving the company to take advantage of uncertain “other opportunities” as a result of a surprising turn of events in the technology giant’s management ranks.

Here is a complete note from Amazon CEO Jesse sent to staff this morning:

After 23 years of working with Amazon Dave Clark decided to leave the company to find other opportunities. His last day at the office will be July 1st.

Dave joined our Operations Pathways program in May 1999 – just a day after graduating from the MBA program – and made the leap from teaching music to helping us create and scale our consumer operations. Dave has had an increasing influence on the company, from the position of operations manager in Kentucky, growing to CEO in the Northeast, to the leadership of WW Operations, and then eventually leading the entire WW Consumer. He led teams that developed several generations of FC, built the Amazon transportation network from scratch and developed significant talent throughout the organization.

Please join me in thanking Dave for his many accomplishments over the years at Amazon and especially for what he has delivered to customers. The last few years have been some of the most challenging and unpredictable we have encountered in the history of Amazon’s consumer business, and I am especially grateful for Dave’s leadership at this time.

As we said last week during our annual shareholders meeting, we have even more work to do to reach the place where we ultimately want to be in our consumer business. To that end, we try to be careful about our plans for Dave’s succession and any changes we make. I expect to be ready with an update for you in the next few weeks.

While change is never easy, I am optimistic about the plan built by the Consumer team, and I am confident that if we stay focused on it, we will deliver the right experience to our customers and deliver business results.

Please feel free to move on to your leaders and teams.

Thank you

Andy
