Fierce fire at Sunnyside Fertilizer Plant, Washington, forces evacuation

Sunniside residents near the Nutrien Ag Solutions fertilizer plant were evacuated from their homes Monday night after a fire at the facility blew potentially dangerous smoke clouds into the air.

The facility is located about a mile south of Interstate 82, between Triple Cities and Yakima, on 1101 Midvale Road in Sunnyside. The highway was not closed.

A level 3 evacuation report for all within a half-mile radius was issued around 4:45 p.m., according to the Yakima Valley Emergency Management.

Middleway Road on Duffy Road was evacuated, and travelers were warned to bypass South 1st Street.

And the American Red Cross evacuation center was opened at Sunnyside Community Center at 1521 S. First St.

According to a press release from the Red Cross, food, cots and other necessities will be provided.

Construction stores Nutrien Ag with an area of ​​13,000 square feet both liquid and solid fertilizers.

The plant operates on a property that was recently sold to Nutrien in the port of Sunnyside.

The facility employs about 15-20 people, Port said in 2018.
