Five teams of the region qualify for the state basketball tournament – Washington Daily News

On Tuesday, the boys and girls of Northside, the boys and girls of Southside and the boys of Washington will start state tournaments.

The girls from Northside (15-2) finished fourth in the 1A Eastern Network and will host № 29 Colombia (10-11) on Tuesday. The Panthers will stay home until the fourth round if they continue to move forward.

“We’re going to take as many home games as we can,” coach Michelle Lasers said. “We are very comfortable here, and our school community supports us very well. We are happy to start. Northside reached the Eastern Final last year and has not lost to Team 1A this season.

Girls from Southside 16th sowing with a record of 13-7 and taking № 17 Woods Charter (11-6) Chapel Hill.

Junior Ka’Naya O’Neill leads the Seahawks with 31 points, 13 rebounds and 5 steals per game.

Bertie HS is the first seed in Class 1A girls.

On the boys side, Washington (14-8) drew 15th seeds and take № 18 East Bladen, 15-8, Elizabethtown. The winner will play in the second round with Kinston № 2 – № 31 West Bladen.

The three-time reigning Farmville Central champion is the first seed in the east.

In 1A Northside (9-10) it is 25th seeds and head to Smithfield to take the No. 8 Charter (19-9).

All five members of the 1A Coastal Plains Conference took part in the tournament when Southside played 28th seeds, only to face the Pamlico County Conference Champion (14-8) on the road.

The Seahawks (7-14) missed both regular season meetings at Hurricanes, 66-41 and 67-58, but after failing to participate in last year’s tournament due to problems tracking contacts with COVID-19 at the last minute, coach Devel Whitney is happy to start.

“We have three guys who were part of last year’s team, and I’m happy for them,” he said. “It’s a bit frustrating to play with a conference team in the first round because it’s fun to play with teams from other places, but we’re grateful for that opportunity. Both games were closer than the final score and I think we have a good shot.

The Chatham Charter is the first sowing in the 1A boys group.

The games of the second round will take place on Thursday, then on Saturday – the third round.
