Ford is recalling 1,280,726 vehicles, specifically the 2013-2018 Ford Fusion and 2013-2018 Lincoln MKZ sedans, due to a brake hose problem that could cause brake fluid to leak.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration document shows that only 2% of recalled vehicles are estimated to have a suspect brake hose. So far, the problem has resulted in one accident with no reported injuries, according to Ford.
A brake fluid leak caused by a break in one or both hoses increases the amount of brake pedal travel, which is how close the pedal must reach to the floor to stop, and thus the distance required for the vehicle to come to a stop.
These problems increase the probability of failure, which is necessary withdraw.
The tears are caused by the hose being worn by bending and twisting during steering and suspension – during testing the hose only allowed 88% of the maximum suspension pivot, or vertical wheel movement.
The recalled parts were manufactured in Mexico and installed on Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles between February 3, 2012 and July 19, 2017.
During the time that the vehicles were on the road, drivers could light up the brake fluid indicator and fix the problem. These drivers are eligible for compensation provided they apply by August 31, 2023.
Dealers will install new hoses for other drivers free of charge. These hoses have a braided construction of a different material, making them more durable and able to handle the wear and tear of the steering and suspension.
Dealers were notified of the upcoming recall on Monday, and drivers of the recalled vehicles will receive letters between April 17 and April 28.
