MEXICO CITY (AP) — Four U.S. citizens were kidnapped after gunmen opened fire on their car in the northern Mexican city of Matamoras, the FBI said.

The four entered Matamoras, across from Brownsville, Texas, on Friday. They were traveling in a white minivan with North Carolina plates.

The FBI’s San Antonio office said in a statement Sunday that the vehicle was fired upon shortly after it entered Mexico.

“All four Americans were placed in a vehicle and taken away from the scene by armed men,” the office said. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for the return of the victims and the arrest of the perpetrators.

Matamoros is home to rival factions of the Gulf Drug Cartel.

The shootings in Matamoras were so violent that the US consulate issued a high-risk alert on Friday.

State police in Tamaulipas said there were people killed and wounded on Friday, but did not give the number or details of the violence.
