The International Tennis Federation presented Stan Smith with the highest award, the Philip Shatrie Prize.
Smith won the singles titles at the US Open in 1971 and Wimbledon the following year, and won five doubles Grand Slam titles and was part of seven teams that won the Davis Cup for the United States.
The award, named after the former ITF president, was introduced in 1996 and is given to people who have made significant contributions to the sport.
Offshore Smith founded his shoe brand Stan Smith in the 1970s and worked as a coach with USTA, working with players including Lindsay Davenport, Jennifer Capriati and Michael Chang.
“(Smith) has made a huge contribution to tennis on and off the court for more than half a century, and I am honored to acknowledge his achievements,” ITF President David Hagerty said in a statement.
The award will be officially presented on Monday at the ITF World Champions Awards Ceremony in Paris.
Smith, who was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987, said he joins “a large list of people who have worked well on and off the court.”
