Mönchengladbach, Germany (AP) – On Tuesday, Borussia Mönchengladbach promoted the head of his youth academy Roland Virkus to the new sports director of the Bundesliga.
The 55-year-old Vircus holds a position opened by the sudden departure of Max Eberl. Eberl left the post on January 28 after 13 years as athletic director due to burnout from pressure at work.
Eberl helped lead Gladbach’s renaissance after relegation in 2011 when the team struggled for Champions League qualifiers in recent seasons. But this season there has been a major downturn for the team coached by Adi Hutter when Gladbach was close to the relegation zone and has already left the German Cup.
“We have a strong structure and a strong team. I am very glad that one of these teams in Roland Virkus will now continue the work of Max Eberl, ”said Gladbach President Rolf Koenigs.
Virkus has been with the club since 1990, when he started as a youth coach. He coached teams under 15, under 17 and 19, and in 2008 became head of the academy.
Gladbach Vice President Rainer Bonhoff said Virkus “has everything he needs for the position of sports director. He has experience in conducting professional football operations, experience in lineup planning, experience working with coaches and players, experience working with players ’agents and a large network. He is a suitable person for this job. “
Gladbach’s first match with Virkus in his new position will take place on Sunday in second place Borussia Dortmund before a series of games with rivals on the relegation with Wolfsburg, Stuttgart and Berlin Hertha.
“I am very happy with the confidence of the club’s management,” said Virkus. “This new task is a great challenge for me, which I will approach with humility and respect, but also with great joy and a lot of energy. I know I’m not alone here, but I have a great team. “
