Olympia is on the way to a championship game appearance for the first time in 25 years. The No. 3 Bears never trailed in the second half against No. 2 Mount Si, and held off a fourth quarter rally from last season’s state runner-up to win, 51-45, and reach Saturday night’s title game against defending champion and top seed Curtis. Forward Andreas Engholm led the way for the Bears with a game-high 23 points, including 10 in the final quarter. This will be Olympia’s first trip to a state title game since finishing runner-up to Rainier Beach in the 3A final in 1998. The two programs celebrated the 25-year anniversary of that classic contest earlier this winter.

No. 3 Olympia and No. 1 Curtis are set to play for the fourth time this season in Saturday night’s championship game. The Bears won the first meeting in a 4A South Puget Sound League contest in January by 12, but the Vikings won the next two last month — a 15-point victory in the 4A SPSL tournament title game and two-point victory in the 4A West Central/Southwest district championship — to take a 2-1 lead in the season series.

Both defending champion Woodinville, the tournament’s top seed, and last year’s runner-up Sumner, No. 5 in this season’s bracket, were knocked out of title contention earlier in the weekend. No. 2 Camas and No. 4 Eastlake advanced out of Friday’s semifinals. This is the first trip to a championship game in program history for the Papermakers, who finished a school-best fourth in last season’s bracket. Eastlake, last season’s fifth-place finisher, returns to a championship game for the first time since the Wolves’ first trip in 2019, when they won the 4A state crown.

A 3A Metro League program will lift the 3A state championship trophy in the Tacoma Dome again this season. This is the 11th consecutive season at least one team from perhaps the state’s toughest league has advanced to a championship game, and eighth season in that span two league rivals have gone head-to-head in the final. The last time the 3A championship game didn’t feature at least one Metro League team was 2011, when Lakes beat Bellevue. League rivals 2 Garfield (15 state championships) and O’Dea (six), who have a combined 21 titles in their histories, will meet in Saturday evening’s championship game for the fourth time this season. Garfield won each of the earlier three contests. The Fighting Irish are looking for their first title since 2019, when they beat Mount Spokane in this game. Garfield most recently won in 2020, against O’Dea.
