Take a look at what’s happening today around majors:
TAMPA BAY TROUBLE
The Rays put Vander Franko’s shortstop on a 10-day list of injured with right quadriceps tension, the latest setback for the team suffering from injuries.
Franco exacerbated an injury running at bases in the ninth inning Monday as a result of a 9-5 defeat by the Texas Rangers. He was replaced by a pinch runner after a hard turn around the first base on the single before stopping and gently returning to the bag.
The right ATV has been bothering 21-year-old Franco for weeks, and now he has stepped aside along with another man from base Brandon Lowe. Lowe retired on May 16 with low back tension.
“Obviously he’s been playing a lot lately,” Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said of Franco. “It’s probably best to see if we can calm him down, get treatment, bring his legs up, and he’ll get better.”
Franco, who is gaining 0.270, has spent his first game with three strikes since May 9 in the first series against the Rangers. In 16 games between them, he scored just 0.107 between those games and did not sit down after scoring the fourth result on April 26th.
MAKE A NAME FOR YOURSELF
In the Yankees rotation with the All-Stars, left-hander Nestor Cortes (4-1, 1.70 ERA) has been outstanding this season.
The 27-year-old Cortes has allowed three or fewer earned runs from all nine starts this year in this game against Los Angeles Angeles and Reid Detmers (2-2, 4.65) at Yankee Stadium.
Cortes held rivals averaging 0.175 batting, the lowest in the major leagues among qualified pitchers included on Tuesday.
Cortes will try to match the highest score in his career for the victories set when he went 5-1 as a newcomer to New York in 2019.
The Angels lost six in a row.
DIDN’T SEND CHAKKI
The Mats have selected first baseman / outfielder Dominic Smith at Triple Syracuse amid a slow start to the season for the 26-year-old.
Most of all this year leading the East NL “Mets” who won five in a row, everything went right, but Smith was disappointed. Hitter Pete Alonso is at first base in New York, and it was believed that Smith could help strengthen a certain striker’s position.
Smith rebounded 0.316 during a breakout season in 2020, but the former first-round pick struggled to repeat that success. This season he is scoring 0.186 without a home run in 101 games and with 0.543 OPS. Smith has played parts of six seasons in the majors and has not played regularly at Triple-A since 2018.
