A cleanup crew then found the backpack along an Oregon interstate discovered a human skull inside, police said.

An Oregon Department of Corrections cleanup team found a “suspicious object” along Interstate 5 on Monday, Nov. 21, Oregon State Police said.

“Troopers from the Salem District Command took possession of a small backpack containing a human skull,” a police press release said. “The skull was taken to the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office.”

Officials are examining the skull and the medical examiner will help identify the remains.

“The skull had no identifiable features, but most likely belonged to a female in her 30s to 40s,” police said.

The skull was found in Marion County, about 70 miles south of Portland.
