Lawmakers to retain control of Senate in 2023 as Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto declared winner in Nevada

Democrats will retain control of the Senate next year, with Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto projected to emerge victorious in a tight race in Nevada on Saturday night.

According to CNN and NBC projections, Ms. Cortes Masta narrowly defeated Republican challenger Adam Laxalt.

Her victory gives Democrats at least 50 seats in the Senate next year.

The only remaining senatorial race in Georgia will be decided in a runoff next month between incumbent Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker.

Democrats are currently holding a crucial vote in the Senate with Vice President Kamala Harris.

The victory is a stunning result for Democrats and President Biden in the midterm elections, when the party holding the White House usually loses seats in Congress. Republicans had already started pointing fingers about their disappointing performances before Ms. Cortez Masta was declared the winner.

Counting of votes in Nevada dragged on for four days after Tuesday’s election, drawing sharp criticism amid predictions by many Republicans that Mr. Laxalt would win.

Control of the House is still up for grabs, though Republicans currently hold the seat lead, 211 to 204, according to CNN.
