LEIPZIG, Germany (AP) — Leipzig signed German left back David Raum from Hoffenheim to a five-year contract on Sunday after he emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s top defenders in the offseason.

Hoffenheim signed Rauma from second-tier side Greuther Furth just a year ago. In his first season in the top division, he made 13 assists and nine appearances for Germany as a key player in coach Hansi Flick’s reshuffle.

Kicker magazine reported that the transfer is worth 26 million euros ($26.6 million), with a possible additional 2 million euros ($2.05 million) in bonuses. That would make Rauma Leipzig’s biggest signing of the summer, ahead of the reported €12 million ($12.3 million) paid for Austrian midfielder Xavier Schlager.

The 24-year-old Raum still had four years left on his contract with Hoffenheim.
