Investigators are raising money to test the DNA of a human foot found in a woman’s shoe near the Washington River in 2021, authorities said.
A beachgoer found a New Balance shoes with a foot inside near the mouth of the Elwha River in Port Angeles, the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office said. The shoe was a women’s size 8.
Authorities said they were never able to identify her due to “limited identification of the female remains.” Investigators were unable to determine the woman’s age, ethnicity, height, weight, hair and eye color.
Investigators are now trying to raise $7,500 to retrieve the woman’s leg DNA tested through Othram, a private laboratory in The Woodlands, Texas. As of Thursday, investigators had collected more than $4,200.
The “unique nature of the evidence” restricted the department from obtaining it forensic analysis The Washington State Patrol and the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System after the discovery of the foot, according to The Seattle Times.
The department also tried to test the foot at a lab at the University of North Texas Health Center in Fort Worth, but it stopped accepting evidence from out of state, the news agency reported.
Port Angeles is about 85 miles northwest of Seattle.
