On January 6, the committee extended the deadline for Trump to hand over the documents

A House committee on Jan. 6 gave former President Donald Trump an extra week to turn over documents in response to an eleventh-hour subpoena, committee chairman Benny G. Thompson announced Friday.

The Democratic-led commission, which voted unanimously to subpoena Mr. Trump at its last hearing last month, has demanded that the former president turn over a list of relevant documents by Nov. 4 and testify under oath before the panel by Nov. 14.

“We have received correspondence from the former president and his attorney in connection with the Special Committee subpoena,” Mr. Thompson, Democrat of Mississippi, said in a statement Friday night when Mr. Trump was scheduled to produce the documents.

“We have informed the former president’s lawyer that he must start presenting documents no later than next week, and he remains subpoenaed to testify beginning November 14,” he said.

A spokesman for Mr. Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The committee alleges that Mr. Trump was the central figure behind a coordinated effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Lawmakers on the panel say they have “overwhelming evidence” of Mr. Trump’s “multipronged” effort to overturn the 2020 election, obtained through the former president’s former appointees and staff.

Mr. Trump’s efforts, the lawmakers said, included “intentionally and maliciously” spreading false allegations of fraud related to the 2020 election, pressuring federal and state officials and members of Congress to overturn the results.

The committee also accuses Mr. Trump of summoning “tens of thousands of supporters to Washington and, knowing they were angry and some armed, sent them to the Capitol.”

Mr. Trump accused the committee of conducting a partisan “witch hunt” and wasting taxpayer dollars in an effort to smear him and Republicans.

The former president lashed out at the committee after its last hearing, criticizing the probe as a “witch hunt of the highest order,” but offered no response to the panel’s demands for documents and sworn testimony.

In the 14-page memo, the former president doubled down on his claims that the 2020 election was “rigged and stolen” and accused the group of “persecuting American patriots who questioned it.”
