Southside senior Ka’Nya O’Neal’s performance against Northside was made even better after coach Milton Ruffin reviewed the tape.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association also took notice of her record-setting night and selected her for a statewide Performance of the Week award.
Off the Southside bench and in the ledger, O’Neal scored 58 points in the Seahawks’ 81-68 victory.
After Ruffin reviewed the tape, he totaled 56 points, 24 rebounds and 10 steals, good for a triple-double.
“I always watch the tape to make sure everything is right, but even more so this year because it’s close to some milestones,” Ruffin said. “We gave her two points that one of her teammates scored, but found some rebounds that we missed on the bench, along with the right amount of steals. I just sat and enjoyed the movie after we rated it. She did everything she wanted on both ends and had an incredible night.”
The NCHSAA accepts nominations from across the state and selects the best each week in the fall, winter and spring.
“Hopefully this recognition will help Ka’Nai achieve her goal of playing college basketball at a high level,” Ruffin said. “The more people know about her in the country, the better. She works extremely hard, is a great team leader and does it in the classroom.”
After the numbers were revised, her 56 points were the sixth-most in state women’s basketball history. She also needs 37 more points to reach 2,000 in her career and is 83 rebounds short of 1,000.
The Seahawks are 14-3 with nine regular season games remaining.
