Open letter to President Hamilton – Washington Square News

In this open letter, a Russian-Ukrainian high school student from NYU wrote to New York University President Andrew Hamilton asking for help in replenishing the NYU student emergency fund to support students affected by the war in Ukraine.

Dear President Hamilton,

Hello. My name is Finley Muratov. I am a high school student of the Russian-Ukrainian NSU, a student-journalist and a child of the Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2021 Dmitry Muratov. And I need your help.

I am writing this letter to ask you to personally donate to Extraordinary Student Fund. On February 27, student dean and vice president Rafael Rodriguez emailed Ukrainian, Russian and other potentially affected students the resources we can turn to at this incredibly difficult time.

«Financial assistance offered to do Emergency Response Form available to students facing economic challenges, ”the email said.

One of the mentioned resources was the NYU Student Emergency Fund – a fund to which students can apply for financial assistance if they find themselves in an unexpected state of emergency. Such as war. Such as the death of a loved one. For example, being cut off from helping your family. When COVID-19 shocked the world and the New York University community along with it, you donated 6% of your salary to the COVID-19 Relief Fund to support students in the financial crisis due to the pandemic.

I ask you to donate 6% of your salary or any other amount significant compared to your annual payment more than $ 1 million from New York University to the NYU Emergency Relief Fund. Ukrainian and Russian students, especially foreign ones, now need help more than ever. Many of us have lost access to help our families either because of the outright destruction of the war or because of economic sanctions not allowing us to use our cards or receive remittances within the United States. Many of us can’t work for paid work because of restrictions imposed by staying in the country on a student visa. The list of restrictions can be continued.

In your appeal to the NYU community, you wrote: “We turned to them to provide a variety of resources and support. We must make a special effort to be generous and patient with each other at this time. ”

President Hamilton, we are students of your university. And we need your help.

Finley Muratov was previously a member of the WSN management team.
