Pep Guardiola has signed a new contract with Manchester City that will see him stay at the Premier League club until 2025.

The Spanish manager’s current deal was due to expire at the end of the season, but he has committed to two more years at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola joined City in 2016 and has overseen the most successful period in the club’s history, winning four league titles and nine major trophies. But he has yet to win the Champions League with City.

The extension will take his time with the reigning Premier League champions to nine years, far longer than any of his previous coaching jobs.

Guardiola spent four seasons at Barcelona and three at Bayern Munich.

“I can’t thank everyone at the club enough for putting their trust in me,” he said on Wednesday. “From the first day I felt something special being here. I couldn’t be in a better place.

“I still have the feeling that we can achieve more together and that’s why I want to stay and keep fighting for trophies.”

Guardiola played 374 games for City, second only to Les McDowall (587) on the club’s list of post-war managers.

“He has already contributed greatly to the success and structure of this organization and it is exciting to think what could be possible given the energy, hunger and ambition he still has,” said chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak.

“Under his special leadership, our first team achieved so much, constantly playing and constantly developing, a style of City football that is admired around the world. Like every City fan, I’m looking forward to what lies ahead.”
