NEW YORK (AP) – Rachel Zegler, who recently received a groundbreaking role in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” will star in the planned Lionsgate prequel to The Hunger Games.

The studio announced on Tuesday that Zegler will play Lucy Gray Baird in “The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Singing Birds and Snakes,” a sequel to The Hunger Games saga, which takes place decades before the adventures of Katniss Everdeen and Jennifer Lawrence. Katniss played in the 74th Hunger Games; Byrd will participate in 10 Hunger Games.

Susan Collins, whose books were adapted into a $ 3 billion blockbuster franchise, published a prequel novel in 2020, based on “The Ballad of the Singing Birds and Snakes.” In Lucy’s film, Gray Baird, honoring impoverished District 12, sings at a key moment during the harvest ceremony. Zegler co-starred with Tom Blythe, who plays 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow.

“Our casting team Deb Zane and Dylan Jury led an exhaustive search, reading hundreds of actors in search of our perfect Lucy Gray. That search ended when Rachel Zegler blew up the roof with her depth and breadth of talent as an actor, singer and performer, ”producer Nina Jacobson said in a statement. “Rachel is quite convincing; just like Lucy Gray, her voice and charisma rule the stage, and her inner strength and humanity change those around her. ”

The film Lionsgate will be released in theaters on November 17, 2023.
