Miami (AP) – A fisherman bitten by a shark near the Bahamas has been pulled to safety by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew after his comrades pulled a harness around his arm.
A crew from the Miami airport picked up the man from a fishing boat near Bimini on Monday afternoon and took him to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, where he was in stable condition, the agency said in a press release.
The companions of a 51-year-old man on a fishing boat Shear Water called the Coast Guard on Monday around 12:50 p.m., saying he was losing blood, so they put a tourniquet on his arm.
“It was the best possible outcome in a really horrible situation,” said Sean Conet, a command officer on duty at the Seventh Coast Guard. “This man was lucky that his comrade-in-arms was able to help before the arrival of the Coast Guard, which allowed him to be quickly removed from the ship.”
