The girls from Northside are finishing the season – Washington Daily News

The girls from Northside lost to rival 1A for the first time this season in a loss in the fourth round of the state tournament on Tuesday, 60-44, at Bertie High School on Tuesday.

The Panthers under the fourth seed (18-3) fell behind 7-0 to start the game, and top scorer Mariah Jones came out on the bench with two early fouls.

Bertie (22-4) increased the lead to 20-13 after the first quarter and 33-22 at the break.

“We put ourselves in an early hole with nasty problems and turnovers and never dug up,” coach Michelle Lasers said. “Bertie is very athletic and they made us change, which we don’t usually do.”

In the second half, the “Panthers” twice reduced the deficit to nine, but the “Falcons” both times responded to quickly return the advantage to double digits.

“We couldn’t handle their speed and just didn’t show up at all,” Lasers said. “I’m disappointed tonight, but we still had a great season.”

Seniors Shian Buck (14) and Paige Sawyer (10) scored double-digit points behind Northside. Jones, plagued by trouble all night, finished with a low six points for the season.

Bertie takes second-seeded Wilson on Saturday to qualify for the 1A State Championship.
