Members of the NYU Langone community share stories of their regular trips across the East River.
6:30 a.m. at the New York University ferry stop in Manhattan. This stop is at the east end of East 35th Street along the East River. And we look forward to our next trip to the Brooklyn Military Terminal. The NYU Ferry is a free ferry service open to all NYU students, staff, and faculty. It starts every morning at 5:29 and lasts until 8:00 p.m. Most of the people who ride the ferry are NYU Langone students and professionals. The port has been bustling since early morning, and we see people lining up at the pier.
Elizabeth Sanchez: I live on the Upper East Side so when I try to take the train it takes over an hour because you have to go all the way down and around. I love the ferry because it saves me time. It is very timely. The ferry ride is shorter and I really like that they are very reliable.
Some ferry passengers prefer this route not only because of its convenience, but also because of the amazing views of the East River.
Rosemary Schlueger: I usually read the news. I like doing New York Times crossword puzzles or reading a bit of the news. And if it’s very early, maybe take a nap. But it’s usually very nice, right? And you can also look at… Brooklyn and Manhattan. Sometimes I’ll even take a picture and post my relaxing commute.
Passengers’ feedback is mostly positive. However, time is the very first problem that people hope to improve.
Slugger: I think the main thing, the only thing people would like to see changed is the time, because, say, if it leaves Brooklyn in half an hour, I personally don’t need to clock the hour, but a lot of people start work at, say, 8 o’clock in the morning , so it’s a bit of a rush to get there… Our people may have to leave an hour early.
Nick Scott: Yes, it does add an hour to your day, but it’s nice to be able to relax after a longer day at the hospital, come home, you’re ready to lick, keep learning when you get back.
We see commuters commuting on the boat between Manhattan and Brooklyn. This 30-minute trip gives them time to relax and prepare for a full day’s work, leaving them with beautiful, sunny moments on the river. Reporting for Washington Square News, Jen Lee.
