A major project is in the works in College Park, Maryland, and leaders say it will transform the college town into something bigger.
A 1.3 million square foot project called Aviation Landing will be nearby College Park Airport.
“Such events transform the economy of the region, creating thousands of jobs,” he said University of Maryland President Darryl Pines.
The development will include restaurants, other businesses and more than 900 residential units.
At least 2,700 permanent jobs are expected to be created.
“Aviation Landing takes advantage of a strategic location,” Pines said, noting that the development will have access to the subway and the Purple Light Rail Line, which should be completed by 2026.
“We’re creating a place in Prince George’s County for our residents to gather without putting more cars on the road,” said County Executive Angela Alsobrooks.
A breakthrough in development is expected in the next couple of years.
“We are excited to watch this popular neighborhood continue to expand and reflect the unique character of this beautiful community,” said Alsobrooks. “Aviation Landing will help us achieve our goal of diversifying and densifying transportation corridors.”
The Terrapin Development Co.which is a partnership between the University of Maryland and a nonprofit organization University of Maryland College Park Foundationworking on the project together with 4 locks and Mosaic Development Partners.
This is just the latest step in a long-running revival effort College Park area.
Last year, the University of Maryland announced a $300 million development project at Campus Drive and Baltimore Avenue. focus on new office, retail, research and residential space.
The first phase of the project, due for completion in 2024, will create 550,000 square feet of research office space north of University of Maryland hotel.
“Together, we will grow our ecosystem for innovation and technology to have a lasting impact on students, faculty, staff and neighbors,” Pines said.
