Turn back the clocks: Daylight saving time ends on Sunday

Daylight saving time ends this Sunday, November 6th at 2am. So before you turn in on Saturday night, set your analog clock back an hour or risk thinking you’re late for breakfast because the microwave clock is an hour ahead.

Sunday will technically be 25 hours long as the calendar reverts to US Standard Time. The East Coast will be on Eastern Standard Time, which will last until March 12.

The concept behind changing the clocks is to take advantage of the natural sunlight. The sun will rise an hour earlier, and it will gradually darken in the evening.

Clock shifts do affect circadian rhythms and can affect sleep; and the change brings an increased threat of drowsy driving on the roads.

“Anytime you just artificially change the time that’s there, you run the risk of creating a mismatch between the outside world and our internal clock, and that can just make it harder to sleep,” Dzerzhevsky said.

Recently, there was a proposal in Congress to make daylight saving time permanent. The Sunlight Protection Act, passed by the Senate in March, would have stopped the biannual transition, but the House has not acted. This was reported by the Associated Press agency.

Another benefit of permanent DST? Fewer deer accidents. New research from the University of Washington shows that year-round daylight savings time “would likely prevent 36,550 deer deaths, 33 human deaths, 2,054 human injuries and $1.19 billion in costs each year.” This is reported by CBS News.
