Rain and mountain snow expected to hit western Washington this weekend could complicate holiday travel, especially in the Cascade mountain passes on Sunday. National Weather Service warned on Thursday.
The worst weather is expected on the night from Saturday to Sunday, when heavy snowfall will cover the roads in Snoqualmie, Stevens and White passes, and people who traveled for the Thanksgiving holiday may be trying to get home.
Low temperatures are expected in Tacoma by the end of the weekend, with a low of 30 degrees on Monday.
Light snow with small accumulations is possible on the Olympic Peninsula and near the Cascade Mountains Friday through Saturday, but heavier precipitation is not expected until Saturday night and Sunday.
Snow is expected not only on mountain passes. Areas from Seattle to Tacoma have a 50 percent chance of more than an inch of snow between Sunday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon next week.
Rain is expected to move across the region on Friday before the snow falls, with more precipitation forecast for most of Saturday. Winds are also expected to increase Saturday night into Sunday morning. Forecasters do not expect widespread effects, but gusts may cause local power outages and damage to tree branches.
