Whitworth returns to NCAA basketball tournament to play Trinity in first round

SPOKAN, WASHINGTON – The University of Whitworth will play Trinity University (Texas) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament on Friday at Mary Hardin-Baylor University in Belton, Texas.

On Monday morning, the NCAA released a men’s Division III men’s basketball break. The time of the game on Friday will be determined later on Monday or early on Tuesday.

Whitworth is participating in the NCAA Division III tournament for the 15th time. The Pirates are 14-13 for all time in the DIII playoffs and for the fourth time in school history are heading to a first-second match in Texas. The last time the Bucks were in Texas was in 2020, beating LeTourne and Texas-Dallas in the first two rounds.

Whitworth has a 22-4 record after winning a share of the North West Conference title with the Pacific Lutherans and Linfield and then winning the NWC tournament to secure an automatic league bid.

Trinity (22-5), a member of the Southern University Athletics Conference, finished second at the University of St. Thomas in the regular season and in the conference tournament. However, St. Thomas is in his final year of transition to full membership in the DIII and is not eligible to compete, so Trinity has demanded an automatic bet from SCAC.

Mary Hardin-Baylor (25-2), the US Southwest Conference champion, will meet Chapman University (22-4) in the second game of the first round on Friday.
