Three people died and two were injured during the shooting on the evening of Sunday, November 13, on the campus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, according to campus police.
The shooter remained at large Monday, prompting students to shelter in place and non-essential personnel to stay home.
The identities of the dead have not been released, and police have not said if they are UVA students.
Student at UVA Christopher Darnell Jones Jr is a suspect in the shootings, campus police said. Jones is a native of Petersburg, Virginia, and was a varsity football player team as a freshman in 2018. However, he did not play in any games.
Jones was described as “Armed and Dangerous” and on the run, perhaps in a black SUV.
The motive for the shooting has not been released.
The incident happened around 10:30 pm on campus in Culbreth’s three-story garagewhich is opposite the theater building of the school.
Several agencies, including Virginia State Police crews, did a “full search” Monday on UVA grounds, officials said. “Reach out to friends and family and report your status,” the police advised.
A hotline (877-685-4836) Police said they were formed to provide news to the students’ families and friends.
UVA President Jim Ryan said he was “heartbroken” in a statement posted on Twitter, and said the school was “working closely with the families of the victims.”
“This is a message that any leader hopes to never send, and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia,” he said.
“This is a traumatic incident for everyone in our community and we have canceled classes for today (Monday, November 14).”
