A school worker was fired after a gun was found in her purse, police say

An elementary school worker left her purse containing a gun in the school restroom overnight, according to a Georgia sheriff’s office.

Oconee County Elementary School employee found the wallet in a staff bathroom the morning of Nov. 10 before students arrived and brought him into the front hall, according to a post on the Oconee County Sheriff’s Facebook page.

The firearm was “immediately secured and removed from campus” by Oconee County Sheriff’s deputies, according to the release.

“We have no reason to believe that she intended to cause harm,” the report said.

The worker was fired and arrested, according to the sheriff’s office. She is accused of carrying a weapon in a school safety zone. Her exact position at the school is not disclosed.

Press secretary Oconee County Elementary School did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Located in Watkinsville, about 70 miles east of Atlanta, the school serves 547 students in from pre to 2nd gradeaccording to US News and World Report.
