Bob Dylan’s publisher is sorry for the $600 autographed copy of the book

NEW YORK (AP) — Bob Dylan’s publisher is offering a $600 refund for a special edition of his new book, “The Philosophy of Modern Song,” admitting that the purportedly “hand-signed” copies were not individually written.

“We want to apologize to those who purchased the limited edition THE PHILOSOPHY OF MODERN SONG,” Simon & Schuster announced in a statement posted Sunday on Instagram. “As it turns out, the limited edition books do contain Bob’s original signature, but in the form of an author’s copy. We are addressing this immediately, providing every customer with an immediate refund.”

Simon & Schuster’s statement comes after days of complaints from customers who compared their copies on social media and found the autographs to be suspiciously similar. The books arrived with a letter from Simon & Schuster CEO Jonathan Karp confirming the authenticity of the signature.

“The Philosophy of Modern Song,” in which Dylan evaluates compositions from Hank Williams’ “Your Cheatin’ Heart” to Jackson Browne’s “The Pretender,” was published on November 1.

A spokesman for Dylan declined to comment Monday.
