Federal officials said a New Mexico woman hid the fentanyl that later killed her boyfriend in the luggage of her two young sons as they were visiting him in Texas.
A man died of an overdose May 31 in a restroom at Dallas Love Field Airport with her sons, ages 8 and 10, by her side, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in North Texas.
A 46-year-old Albuquerque woman faces a charge of distribution of a controlled substance resulting in death, according to the release.
Surveillance video at the airport shows the father greeting his sons, going through their luggage and then going into the restroom where he died, federal officials said.
Earlier text messages between the father and the mother indicated she knew he planned to take fentanyl and warned him about the risk of an overdose, the release said.
“No passing out on the kitchen floor,” she wrote in the post. “Seriously, you could. There is no dying on the kitchen floor.’
Investigators found “a container of Clinique brand makeup containing over a gram of fentanyl” inside the stall where the man died, the release said.
“I feel for these children. Losing one parent due to the actions of the other is a tragedy for a child,” U.S. Attorney Chad Meacham said in a release.
The woman faces at least 20 years and up to life in prison if found guilty.
