Joe Biden crashes Twitter at Democratic fundraiser

President Biden on Friday complained about Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter and accused the platform of spreading misinformation around the world.

“Elon Musk goes out and buys an outfit that spews lies all over the world,” Mr. Biden said at a Democratic fundraiser in Chicago. “There are no more editors in America.”

Mr. Musk, who recently completed a $44 billion buyout of the social media platform, has vowed to rein in Twitter’s censorship policies, which many conservatives say have been used to protect free speech.

“Having a common digital city square is essential to the future of civilization,” Mr. Musk wrote in a message to advertisers last month.

“However, Twitter clearly cannot become a free-for-all hellscape where you can say whatever you want without consequence!” he added. “In addition to complying with the laws of the land, our platform must be warm and welcoming to all.”

Earlier this week, Twitter noted a White House message crediting Mr. Biden with “the biggest increase in their Social Security checks in 10 years.”

The message was accompanied by a clarification on Twitter, which noted that many of his viewers added context to the message, noting that the increase in payments was “due to an annual cost of living adjustment, which is based on the level of inflation.”

The White House has since deleted the tweet.
