KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — Kootenai Health is opening a new detox facility to help those community members struggling with addiction.

It is known as the Adult Recovery Unit and is for people with chronic alcohol or opioid use disorders.

The unit will monitor and help people with addiction adapt to a life without substances.

“This is the only unit of its kind in north Idaho,” said Claudia Miewald, director of behavioral health services for Kootenai Health.

Currently, nearly 21 million Americans have at least one addiction, and only 10 percent receive treatment.

The Adult Rehab Unit offers 24-hour medically supervised detoxification under the supervision of a physician. Patients typically stay in the unit for three to five days before being referred to the next level of care, such as Kootenai Health’s intensive outpatient program.

“We are very excited to be able to offer this service in our region,” said Meewald. “Detoxification services are often an important part of the recovery process that allows a person to begin their journey to sober living and overall improved physical and mental health.”
