National parks are free on Veterans Day; lifetime free admission for veterans

The National Park Service is waiving entrance fees to all national parks on Veterans Day Friday, the last day no fees are charged.

Most national parks are free year-round, but the special Veterans Day holiday extends to about 110 parks that normally charge fees. There are still fees for park services such as camping, boating and tours.

“Both on a free admission day and throughout the year, we encourage everyone to discover their national parks and the benefits of spending time outdoors,” said National Park Service Director Chuck Sams in an NPS release for 2021, announcing five toll parks. free days in 2022.

Veterans can visit for free after their namesake day.

Starting Friday, current U.S. military members and their dependents, U.S. veterans and Gold Star families can sign up for the Interagency Military Lifetime Pass, which gives them a lifetime of free admission to national parks.

“We have a sacred duty to America’s veterans. This new lifetime pass is a small demonstration of our country’s appreciation and support for those who have selflessly served in the U.S. Armed Forces,” Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said in a release.
