Two young brothers have died after they fell into a frozen pond while playing outside in Illinois, their family and officials say.
Palatinate police officers said they received a report about the children they had fell into the pond around 3:30 PM on Wednesday, November 23rd. When officials arrived, firefighters pulled the two boys from the water. Both were taken to Northwestern Hospital in Arlington Heights.
A Cook County spokesperson confirmed to McClatchy News that the boys have been identified as Romalys Brooks, 6, and Rosaiah Brooks, 4.
Rosaia Brooks was taken to Lutheran Hospital and pronounced dead at 11:43 p.m. Wednesday, police said. Romalis Brooks was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 3:54 a.m. Thursday.
The brothers were playing at their grandmother’s house when they fell under the icetheir mother, Tegan Ivey, told WMAQ.
“I heard them, ‘Mom! Mom,” she told WLS. “I went outside and did the only thing I knew how to do: I took my shoes off and sat on the ice and tried to get them out.”
There were boys under water for about 20 minutesthe publication reports.
“It felt like forever waiting for them to pull them out of that water,” Ivey told WLS. “I’m broken.”
Palatine is a suburb of Chicago.
