The Inner Banks STEM Center received a $180,000 grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Foundation at its annual fundraising gala on Saturday, November 19.

According to Al Powell, president of the Inner Banks STEM Center, the grant will help fund a program called Renewable Energy Using Artificial Intelligence for three years. Inner Banks STEM partners to provide the program will be NASA, ECU’s School of Engineering, and North Carolina A&T’s School of Environmental Science.

Alfred Mace, chief strategist and director of diversity at the Burroughs Wellcome Foundation, presented the check to Powell. Part of the Foundation’s work includes donating to nonprofits like the Inner Banks STEM Center that inspire young people to pursue careers in science. “believes that a diverse scientific workforce is essential to the process and promotion of research innovation, academic discovery, and public service,” according to the Foundation’s website.
