The driver of a Dodge Challenger was traveling with two children when she struck and injured a bicyclist on State Route 7 near Bethel High School Friday night, police said. She continued driving, colliding with another car on the road.
The bicyclist was taken to a Tacoma hospital with serious injuries, said Rob Reyer, a spokesman for the Washington State Patrol.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault, vehicular assault and two counts of child endangerment.
Neither the driver nor the two juveniles in the car were wearing seat belts, according to a Washington State Patrol report.
According to the report, a 2012 Dodge Challenger struck a bicyclist near 216th Street while traveling north on State Route 7 around 6:30 p.m. Nov. 25. At the time of the report, it was unclear if he was wearing a helmet or in which direction he was cycling.
After colliding with the biker, the driver drove north for about a mile. Just after rear-ending a Ford pickup near the Spanaway Walmart on 8th Avenue, the Dodge stopped in the middle of the road.
Reyer said the car collision “caused significant damage” to the Dodge, but its occupants were not injured. According to him, the truck driver received minor injuries.
The crash blocked traffic for about two and a half hours Friday night.
Reyer did not have an update on the cyclist’s condition as of Saturday morning.
