Matto Espresso, the coffee chain known for its $2.50 coffee and pastries, has a new location at the Stern School of Business.

Matto Espresso, the discount coffee chain that has been an affordable choice for sleep-deprived NYU students for years, has opened a new location in the Stern School of Business building on campus. It replaces Sosnoff Cafe, a coffee shop that previously operated at the location but closed for good at the start of the pandemic.
The chain is located nearby on Mercer Street, which has long been popular with NYU students for its convenient location and cheap coffee, which recently rose from $2 to $2.50 due to inflation. And it’s not just the coffee that’s cheap—everything at Matto, including tea, pastries, and more, is $2.50.
Unlike other campus coffee shops, NYU Matto’s does not accept food wraps or Dining Dollars.
“Matto was chosen for their food quality, affordability, sustainability practices, diverse workforce and size, among other reasons,” Stern Chief Operating Officer Neil Rader said in announcing the store’s opening. “In addition to their current in-store selection, Matto will be adding salads, soups, fruit and yogurt bars to meet the needs of our community.”
Sosnoff Cafe has been open for 15 years and closed its doors for good due to COVID-19. After it closed, NYU formed a committee of students, administrators and faculty to decide on a new coffee shop to fill the space.
NYU student Rajan Srinivasan wishes it would accept meal plans or dining dollars as payment, like NYU’s Starbucks on West Fourth Street and Peet’s in the Kimmel Center for University Life.
“I’ll go to a new place — I like their food,” Srinivasan said. “But I would probably use it more if I could use Dining Dollars or food. It would give me more incentive to go.”
Harrison Wang, a junior at NYU, said that while he hasn’t been to the new Matto campus yet, he thinks it’s good to have more affordable coffee and pastry options close to campus and that he plans to visit soon. .
“If you’re looking for an inexpensive option that’s reliable and convenient, this is probably one of the options,” Wang said. “I’m interested in hearing about the decision as to why it’s at Stern and not somewhere else that will have more students because it might be a little out of place for some students.”
The new NYU Matto location is open to students Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cafe can be accessed by entering the Henry Kaufman Management Center building at 44 W. Fourth St. .
